What should you notice first?

Begin with the whole animal and the whole scene. A confident identification comes from several independent clues—not from moving closer.

What first-time visitors usually notice

  • Impala alarm snorts, monkey calls and squirrels focused on one place may reveal a hidden leopard.
  • A hanging tail, paw or unusual shape on a horizontal branch may be the first clue.
  • A leopard walking beside a road may leave suddenly; do not race ahead repeatedly.

What experienced guides look for

  • Drag marks, blood spots or vultures near a tree that may hold cached prey.
  • Fresh tracks on sandy road margins in early morning.
  • Multiple prey species looking and calling toward the same patch of cover.

What might the behaviour mean?

Leopards patrol, scent mark, stalk, rest in cover and use trees confidently. They rely on stealth rather than long chases.

Best places to look

In Southern Kruger, river corridors, rocky areas and mature trees are worth scanning. The best 'place' is often wherever prey animals are persistently alarm calling.

Dawn, dusk and early night are active periods, but leopards may be seen in daylight, especially resting.

  • At a tree kill, leave room beneath and around the tree so the leopard can approach or depart.

  • Do not broadcast exact live locations where crowding could trap the animal.
  • Give mothers, cubs and feeding leopards exceptional space.
  • Leave if your presence changes the leopard's route or prevents access to a kill.
