What should you notice first?

Begin with the whole animal and the whole scene. A confident identification comes from several independent clues—not from moving closer.

What first-time visitors usually notice

  • A giraffe staring fixedly can guide your attention toward a disturbance.
  • The wide, slow walk is normal; a giraffe can accelerate quickly when needed.
  • Necking between males ranges from light sparring to forceful combat. Keep your distance.

What experienced guides look for

  • Oxpeckers and other birds moving over the body.
  • The browsing line on trees and which plant species are being selected.
  • A giraffe's long stare, nostril position and body angle when it has detected danger.

Interpretation

What might the behaviour mean?

Giraffe spend much of the day walking and browsing. They ruminate while standing or resting and may visit water less often than many grazers, although they still drink when conditions allow.

Groups are flexible rather than fixed. Individuals join and leave loose associations; mothers and calves may form nursery groups.

Visual posture, scent and low-frequency sounds are important. Much giraffe communication is subtle and easy for visitors to miss.

Breeding

A female gives birth standing, and the calf drops to the ground. Calves can stand and move soon afterwards, an important defence in predator country.

  • Avoid cutting off hooves or ossicones unintentionally.
  • Wait for the giraffe to lift its head naturally; do not call or clap for attention.

  • Let giraffe move through residential stands without being followed on foot.
  • Keep extra distance from mothers with small calves and males that are necking.
  • Do not offer food from balconies or vehicles.

  • Do not stand close to a giraffe's legs; a defensive kick can be powerful.
  • Never block a giraffe between buildings, fences or vehicles.
